‘Spotlight’, depiction of church child molestation

'Spotlight' is a 2015 American feature themed on child molestation at a local church, winning the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the 88th Academy Awards.

Named one of the finest films of 2015 by various publications, the flick highlights an important social issue affecting the lives of many children in a place believed to be a sanctuary for the young believers attending Catholic churches. 

'Spotlight' follows child sex abuse in the Boston area by numerous Roman Catholic priests. The film features a string of stars, including Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams and John Slattery, it tells the true story of an American newspaper's investigation into the cover-up of child abuse within the Catholic Church.

Walter Robinson is editor-at-large for the Boston Globe, leading the Spotlight Team's investigation that uncovered the Catholic Church's sexual abuse. He said of the case highlighted in the flick that in the US, people “all thought the church is too important, too moral as an icon, Surely they must be right. So when a priest defends and they said it’s just one priest, people believed them. When in fact they were literally covering up the sexual crimes of thousands of priests across the United States for decades.”

The flick is an old school with no special effects and precious little action as it is simply a powerful story which according to many critics has been well told.

The original music made by Canadian musician Howard Shore has added more depth to the important message of this movie by Tom McCarthy. You can listen to the music along with selected scenes from the impressive movie.
